Nexus of the Internet
Colocation + Hosting + Interconnection + Business Continuity
Loudoun, Virginia

Loudoun County is Now the “Nexus of the Internet”

The County’s current network infrastructure routes 70 percent of the world’s Internet traffic. Most of this Internet traffic is concentrated in 56 data centers located in the northeastern quadrant of the County. This area has become known as “Data Center Alley.” There are over a thousand network peering points at the Nexus of the Internet. Carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Qwest, Comcast, and Cox, all have a significant investment and data center presence in Loudoun County, Virginia, at the Nexus of the Internet.

In the coming years, more data centers are being planned and constructed here. With so many networks at one place, businesses can connect directly to the network servicing their customer or distant office. These fast connections are known as “Layer 2” Metro Ethernet and allow for a business to establish private point-to-point Ethernet connections.

At present, there are currently 13 electric power substations servicing Data Center Alley with six more being proposed to support future expansion. Electric power consumption had reached 300MW by 2013 and is expected to increase to 650MW by the end of 2014. This is over a doubling in only two years. Fueling this dramatic expansion are cloud services. Specifically, the “Private Cloud” renaissance where businesses are now creating their own custom private cloud through managed service providers. At the current rate, there will be a thousand data centers here within a decade. At the April 15, 2014 Loudoun County Planning Commission meeting, a member stated “you haven’t seen anything yet!” By year’s end, these data centers will consume the equivalent of 650,000 residences or one and a half times the populations or residences of both Loudoun and Fairfax Counties combined. West coast service providers have each built one or more data centers at the Nexus of the Internet in Loudoun County. These include Google, Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft since low network latency, that is, the time it takes to connect, is one of the keys to the success of their business.

As businesses migrate their growing infrastructure to this new Private Cloud architecture, there will be further demands for low latency and high speed and availability from service providers. Google brought very high speed Internet (1 Gb/s or GE) to test cities such as Kansas City to see what would happen and the resulting explosion in business transformed selected towns into hotbeds of innovation. Now some businesses here in Loudoun County will have the opportunity to connect to these high Internet speeds and higher at a very low cost.

The map shows the optical fiber route that is now being laid in the Route 28 district. If your property or business is adjacent to that route, it too may be connected at these transformative speeds at a low cost. Properties with this unique type of access enjoy larger demand and command a higher value. Businesses along this route can take advantage of the very high speeds and the low latencies characteristic of data centers at the Nexus of the Internet.

The American Internet Exchange (AIX) connects businesses to the Nexus of the Internet via privately-leased optic fiber service. AIX can enhance this connectivity with a redundant private, wireless point-to-point Ethernet service from its on-campus 150-foot wireless tower. AIX also provides Private Cloud services with its 3-carrier-neutral colocation and hosting data center facilities within the Nexus of the Internet. This data center service allows for Disaster Recovery (DR) for commercial businesses as well as County, State, and Federal governments.

Recently this service was enhanced specifically to accommodate law enforcement agencies and contractors which need to be Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliant. For this reason, all AIX personnel have gone through an extensive Department of Defense (DoD) background investigation and have their fingerprints on file with DoD. This unique capability nicely complements and completes the offerings which many pubic data centers cannot provide at the Nexus of the Internet.
